So...I've always had a difficult time defining myself as a leader. This blog and my urban leadership class this semester seem to parallel in many ways. I was doing the reading for next weeks class and it spoke about how to delegate tasks to subordinates. This is something I've always had a difficult time doing, and struggle with in my internship.
One of the things they talk about is building trust with your team, in order to move forward together. I guess it doesn't make much sense to be burdening myself with the bulk of the responsibility and pressure, when there are perfectly good people around me, who are willing and able to help.
I think I'm going to sit down tomorrow and make a list of different tasks which I'm able to delegate to the other people working here, and see how it goes.
wish me luck
Delegation is certainly a challenge for many people. Once you hurdle past the "control" issue you will smooth right into delegating. Trusting those around you is very important. The one thing to keep in mind though is that delegating does not remove your responsibility. If they screw up and you do not catch it, you will be held more accountable than the one who screwed up. Best of luck.
ReplyDeleteI agree, delegation can be hard. I don't know your situation, but it can especially be hard if you're an intern and don't feel you have much authority to delegate. Hopefully that's not the case and you're able to delegate, feel accomplished, and get things done. Good luck, and hope to hear how it goes :)
ReplyDeleteDelegation is very tough! I always worry about the quality of work being done. But whenever I happen to delegate I always learn that other perspectives always add something to my own perception and to the quality of work.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck Amanda!
ReplyDeleteI think you have vision and you will certainly be able to delegate some tasks.
I like your blog because you seem a very sincere and authentic person.
Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI wish you all the best with this! You are right, it is challenging to delegate until you establish trust. I have found it helpful to consider my personal and professional weaknesses and delegate to people to help on those related tasks.
Amanda- I completely understand. Let me know how this goes. I could definitely make use of a list if it is successful :-)
ReplyDeleteDelegation is very important in leadership! My boss has a hard time releasing control of a lot. She is often overwhelmed and unpleasant to work with... If she were better able to delegate tasks and let her employees have more control - It would create SUCH a better work environment. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAmanda I have found that if you have trained willing people that you can delegate to you will have a much easier time of letting go of the tasks. No one wants their fate in the hands of someone else. If I am going to be held responsible for X then I want to make sure X is done right, so I will do it. Then I have no one else to blame. If they are well trained then it is easier to have someone else do X cause you know they can do it!
