This was an interesting week during my internship, in addition to having a hectic week all around. I met and spoke with some relatively interesting people, who were visiting from out of town. Some of the things we spoke about included the differences between Oregon and Phoenix. For many reasons, I've been drawn towards the Northwestern part of the country. Something one of the individuals mentioned was the fact that there is no sales tax in Oregon. Did you know that?
Another thing that's happened recently, in my world, deals with politics. I've been trying to pay close attention to what's going on in the world around me. Yesterday I drove past a billboard that listed all of the propositions. This inspired me to research all of them, and prepare myself to made education decisions on this upcoming election.
DONT FORGET TO VOTE
Did you know that Florida does not have a sales tax either? Also, in a few states military members to not pay state income tax? The whole tax thing sometimes gets my blood boiling. If I have to pay, everyone should pay. REMEMBER TO VOTE.
ReplyDeleteHi! great post. Four other states that don't have a general sales tax are Alaska, Delaware, New Hampshire, and Montana, while California has a 8.25 percent sales tax!!! Taxes are not a bad thing, assuming that it truly reflects the needs of a fiscally responsible government. The U.S. federalist system gives state and municipal governments the mandate to determine sales tax, highlighting the importance of local elections. Yet, unfortunately, the turn-out for local elections are shamefully low. And the decisions made in local elections probably effect us most. So how do you feel about election results?
ReplyDeleteAmanda and Wasim,
ReplyDeleteWhat do you guys think we should do to get people to vote in local elections? I'd love to help in a campaign to get people to vote.
Samantha, I would push more people to sign up for and use the Mail in ballot. the ballot arrives about six weeks before the election and you have to mail it in by two weeks before the election or you can drop it off at your polling place on election day. I think if more people were advised of this option they would use it!!
